Come to my funeral, if you can
Remember the man that you knew
Remember his hopes, his manner and tropes,
The things he believed that were true.
Come to me funeral, if you wish
Say a prayer for the soul that was mine
Raise a toast, shed a tear, watch the ghost disappear
On his journey through bottomless time.
Come to my funeral, if you do
I will honour your presence in song
As the memories fade of a journey waylaid
I will wait where the spirits belong.
Come to my funeral, if you can
If you can’t please don’t worry – its fine
I will see you again in the fullness of when
And together we’ll work out the rhyme.
The date of my funeral, not yet set
Is a certainty, solid as stone
In the time till it comes I will bang on the drums
As a creature of flesh and of bone.
Come to my funeral, bring a balloon
Don’t wear black, don’t be sad or despair
Just remember the bloke who has gone up in smoke
And whose memory lives in the air.
