shadows

I heard it first, a rumble

midst the choral sound of birds,

the air in thrumming density,

the murmuring of war-like words,

I watch a shadow pass across

the meadowlands of hay

and saw the gun-metal silhouettes

of RAF at play.

I ask myself the question

am I glad that I am safe?

Far from the battlefields

that bombs and bullets strafe

far from the carnage and

the horrors that await

the families who live in fear

of politics dictate.

I ask myself another

Is this all that we can be?

a species of dominion

so blind we cannot see,

that manufactured enmity

and endless pointless wars

cause damage to our sense of self

as we watch the profits soar
