The Emperor stood naked
while the King had brother woes
The Sheikh was counting money
He had bought the Emperors clothes.
The Tsar was on the naughty step
the Duke had lost his name
The guilty with impunity
Had hidden all the blame.
The Fortune-Tellers crystal ball
Had clouded in deceit
The Lunatics were laughing
At the Ice-Cap in retreat.
The Doctors were all knackered
& the nurses on their knees
And meanwhile in the forest
They were chopping down the trees.
The Taxi-Driver using Apps
Had Ubered up his ride
The Charlatans within Reform
Were baiting up their Pride.
The Generals were growing fat
With medals on their chest
The Know-it-Alls knew nothing
& were making up the rest.
The Unions in disarray
Were threatening to strike
Whilst Influencers influenced
A click for every like.
The Rocket-Makers profited
From dollars spent in space
The Chefs were cooking sausages
Of ill reputed taste.
The Farmers were all worried
That they’d have to pay some tax
The son of a Toolmaker tried
To sharpen up his axe.
The Postman brings us letters
That are mostly higher bills
Our pockets feeling empty
At the automated tills
The clock is slowly ticking
The Alarm Bells fails to toll
The Players keep on playing
As we did a deeper hole.
The poet pens a litany
The reader reads the words
In truth the troubles deepen
At the fate of wrath incurred.
